About the balance beam:
The balance beam, a quintessential apparatus in artistic gymnastics, demands both strength and elegance. According to the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), the standard dimensions are:
- Height: 125 cm (4.10 feet)
- Length: 500 cm (16 feet)
- Width: 10 cm (3.9 inches)
Since the 1980s, beams have been covered with leather or suede for better grip and are equipped with a spring to absorb impact from high-exertion tumbling, turns, and poses. A balance beam routine typically lasts between 70 to 90 seconds and has captivated audiences at the Olympic Games since women were first awarded individual medals in this event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
