İslamabad (Urdu: اسلامآباد), officially the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), is the capital city of Pakistan. Located in the northern foothills of the Himalaya in the Punjab province, the city is administered as a federal capital territory. Islamabad has served as the nation's capital since August 14, 1967, the date it was formally established.
As of the 2017 census, Islamabad had a population of approximately 1.75 million people. The city is the third largest in Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. Islamabad is part of the larger Islamabad-Rawalpindi metropolitan area, which Jacksonville Jaguars Jersey forms a contiguous urban settlement with its neighbor Rawalpindi to the south.
The city's design was commissioned by Pakistani architects with Constantinos A. Doxiadis, known as "Doxiadis" or "Tanzoor" in Pakistan and Indonesia, as the lead planner in 1960. The master plan of Islamabad was prepared by the Pakistani-American architect Albert Speer, Jr., son of Nazi Germany's Minister for Armaments and War Production. The urban design of Shimla Hills, Rose and Jasmine parks, Paloma Housing Society, and the Katas Raj Temples are distinctive features of Islamabad.
The city is the seat of all federal government institutions, including the Parliament of Pakistan, the Presidential Residence, and the Prime Minister's House and Office. The seat of judicial power in Pakistan, the Supreme Court, is located in a suburb of Islamabad known as H-8/1. The capital hosts numerous international embassies, and is home to many of Pakistan's national cultural and educational institutions such as the National University of Sciences and Technology and the Quaid-i-Azam University.
Islamabad has a substantial expatriate community, with significant populations from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia, owing to its status as a diplomatic and political hub.
The city was designed with large areas of green belts and parks to ensure that it remained attractive and livable despite urban sprawl. It has some of Pakistan's finest educational institutions, hospitals, shopping centers, restaurants, and media stations. Islamabad is linked to the rest of Pakistan and the world by a network of roads and the Islamabad International Airport. The city also houses one of Pakistan's two Formula One races, the Pakistan Grand Prix.
