🎓 Course Title: Technical Product Management: Learn on 4 Real Industry Cases

Why Technical Products Management? 🤔

This course is about the rapidly growing role of Tech Product Manager in today's IT industry. In an era where innovative companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Booking, and Uber thrive on leveraging technical insights to create value, the need for a mix of product and technical skills has never been greater. 🌐🤖

As you probably guessed, search algorithms and large-scale infrastructure are two examples of where Tech PMs shine. They play a pivotal role in taking a vague idea from conception to becoming an end customer facing solution, with a focus on the minimum UI paired with maximum algorithmic and infrastructural magic. 🔍🚀

But it's a mistake to think that the application of Tech PM skills is limited to IT giants. The reality is, mostly everything around us is an online service: booking flights and hotels, ordering food, learning music, even renewing passports — all these products are underpinned by software and services. These are driven by product leaders who navigate the complex landscape of technology and services. 🛫🎶✈️

The required PM skill set is indeed evolving with the times. For a successful Product Manager in any modern IT project, there are critical, important, and nice-to-have skills:

  1. Product Management Base (critical, ~50% of success) - solid PM fundamentals which are well-covered by other courses.
  2. Technical Product Addition (important, ~30% of success) - combining external and internal systems, understanding non-functional requirements (architecture, security, infrastructure, reliability), and turning a product idea into an IT service. This course focuses on this aspect. 🛠️💡
  3. Domain Knowledge (nice to have, ~20% of success) - specific knowledge about the domain your product operates in, which can be learned if your PM and tech product base is strong enough.

Why I Can Talk About Tech Product Management? 👨‍🏫

I bring a wealth of experience to this course, with a PhD in Computer Science, 7 years of software development under my belt, and another 7 years as a Tech Product Manager at Booking.com across different product and tech departments. I am also the founder of productdo.io, a platform dedicated to enhancing PM skills through practical simulations. 🏫💻

Course Structure 📚

Part 1: Introduction and Goals 🌟

We'll explore why Tech PM roles are on the rise, using real-world examples from Google, Uber, AWS, Stripe, etc., and set the course objectives.

Part 2: Tech PM Role Clarification 🔍

Here, I'll quickly cover the specifics of the Tech PM role, ensuring you understand the distinctions between a Technical Product Manager, a classical Product Manager, an Engineer, a Project Manager, and a Technical Program Manager. Understanding these roles will help you navigate the field with clarity. 🫐

Part 3: Practical Use Cases 🤝

The core of this course lies in its practical approach. You'll work through 4 real tech product use cases from different industries and company setups, applying the Tech PM thinking process. Each case is followed by quizzes, and you'll wrap up with a final assignment to test your understanding. Students who complete these assignments will be equipped to apply Tech PM strategies to their own projects. 📈🔧

Part 4: Skill Enhancement and Growth Directions 🌱

In this part, I'll cover the building blocks of Tech Product development (APIs, infrastructure, architecture, monitoring, reliability, security) and provide a curated list of external materials to help you boost your technicality and PM skills further. 📚➡️🚀

Join us on this journey to become a Tech Product Manager and build rockstar products based on yet undiscovered tech insights! 🎉🛠️🚀
