Why take this course?
🚀 Course Title: Zen Buddhist Stories: The Iconoclastic, Humorous Path to Sudden Enlightenment 🧘♂️✨
Course Headline:
Discover the Unconventional Wisdom of Zen Buddhism through Engaging Stories and Practical Exercises
Course Description:
Introduction to Zen: Zen, or Chan Buddhism, is a rich and vibrant school of Mahayana Buddhism that traces its roots back to ancient India and has profoundly shaped Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Japanese cultures. This course delves into the essence of Zen, highlighting its unique blend of meditation, self-control, and direct understanding from an accomplished teacher.
Core Teachings of Zen: Zen emphasizes direct insight into Buddha nature, de-emphasizing scriptural knowledge. It teaches us to "point directly to human heart, attain instantly to Buddha nature" and to see the truth beyond words - "your fingers are the words, the truth is like the moon." The philosophy of Zen is rooted in the concept of the identity of being and vacuity, moment and eternity. It encourages us to transcend distinctions, including those between self and other, for a more effective response to life's situations, much like a wrestler who sees himself as a wave.
Practices in Zen: The course explores various practices, including observing the breath, contemplating the mind, and engaging with Zen koans - enigmatic anecdotes designed to provoke insight and enlightenment. These practices are not merely religious exercises but pathways to understanding the deeper truths of existence.
Historical Influence and Modern Relevance: Zen's influence on Western culture, particularly through the works of Alan Watts and D.T. Suzuki, as well as the beat poets like Jack Kerouac and Gary Snyder, will be examined. The course also touches upon the pivotal role of the Chicago Review in introducing Zen to the American literary community during the 1950s and 60s.
Course Structure: This course consists of 20 captivating Zen Buddhist stories, each explored through two lectures. The first lecture focuses on understanding the story's language and context, with vocabulary studies and recitations. The second lecture enhances listening comprehension through a recitation of the story. No prior knowledge of Zen or Chinese language is required; however, it is recommended to have a foundational understanding from my College Mandarin Chinese on Your Own Beginning Level course.
