Why take this course?

  1. Fork: A tactical maneuver where two or more pieces are attacked simultaneously, often resulting in material gain for the player who executed the fork. This can be achieved with a bishop, knight, rook, or queen.

  2. Pinned Piece: A piece or pawn is pinned when it is attacked by an opponent's piece which is supported by another piece of the same color. The pinned piece cannot move without losing its defense or being captured.

  3. Skewer: A sequence where one piece is moved so that it attacks an intermediate piece (or pawn) and the king, with the opponent's king being check, or at least forced to move due to the immediate threat.

  4. Discovery (or Simple Discovery): A tactic in which a player moves one of their own pieces to expose a line of attack from a piece that is currently on a different line of attack from an opponent's piece. The goal is to create a direct attack against the opponent's king, queen, rook, bishop, knight or pawn with a check.

  5. X-Ray Attack: This is similar to the discovery, except that the attacking piece is placed on the same rank (for horizontal lines) or file (for vertical lines) as the targeted defender piece, and the move creates a direct line of attack from the positioning of the attacking king against an opponent's king, queen, rook, bishop, knight or pawn.

  6. Mating Patterns: These are specific configurations of pieces on the chessboard that culminate in checkmate. Some examples include:

    • Damiano's Mate: A mating pattern where the white king is under attack by the black queen and the black bishop, and there are no legal moves left for the white player to prevent checkmate. This pattern can occur under various conditions. The key to this pattern is that both of the attacking pieces (the queen and the bishop) must be able to reach the white king without being blocked by any other piece or pawn.
    • Fool's Mate: A classic checkmate pattern where the black king is in a position where it cannot escape from checkmate, and there are no legal moves left for the white player to prevent checkmate. This pattern can occur under various conditions. The key to this pattern is that both of the attacking pieces (the queen and the bishop or the rook) must be able to reach the white king without being blocked by any other piece or pawn.
  7. Check: A move in which the player's own king is not placed in check, i.e., under attack by at least one of the opponent's pieces. However, it does alert the player to the potential for combinations and tactical situations that could lead to such a position.

  8. "Opponent Downsides" aka "Tactical Issues" aka "Tactical Liabilities" aka "Weakness of Position" Patterns: These help you identify if a combination may exist in the position due to:

    • Awkward Pieces: Pawns or pieces that are left unprotected and can be easily captured.
    • King Safety Issues: Situations where the king's safety is compromised, such as being exposed to attacks from opponent's pieces without adequate protection.
    • Loose Pieces: Pieces that lack support and can be outmaneuvered or trapped.
    • Overworked Pieces: Pieces that have too many duties or moves, often leaving them vulnerable to tactical attacks.
    • Pieces Away from King: When key pieces are far away from the king, it can leave the king unprotected and subject to attacks.
  9. "Tactical Liabilities" in General: General weaknesses in the position that can be exploited by an opponent.

  10. Weaknesses in General: Broader tactical or positional weaknesses that can signal potential for combinations, tactical situations, and strategic plans. Understanding these patterns and concepts is crucial for improving your chess tactics and strategies. Recognizing these elements during gameplay allows you to better anticipate opponent's threats while creating opportunities for your own tactical advantages.
