Course Overview
What is the IELTS and who is it for?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized test that assesses your ability to use English in an academic or professional context. Taken by over three million people in 2016, it's used by over 10,000 institutions and agencies worldwide. Whether you're planning to study at a university, work professionally, or migrate to Canada, Australia, or the UK, the IELTS is your gateway to proving your English proficiency.
Course Structure
The IELTS exam consists of four main sections: 🎧 Listening, ✏️ Reading, ✍️ Writing, and 💫 Speaking. Each section is designed to test a different aspect of English usage and comprehension. Here's what you can expect from each part:
Listening (4-5 minutes)
You will listen to various audio recordings and answer questions on them. The test assesses your ability to understand spoken English, especially in academic or workplace settings.
Reading (30 minutes)
This section includes a variety of tasks such as multiple choice, identifying information, matching headings and sentences, and short-answer questions. You'll need to read and comprehend three texts from sources like books, newspapers, and magazines.
Writing (60 minutes)
Here, you'll be tasked with writing two pieces: one is a letter responding to a problem or point of view, the other is an essay expressing a perspective on an issue, based on a given statement or argument. This part tests your ability to organize and present ideas clearly, logically, and effectively in writing.
Speaking (11-14 minutes)
The speaking test consists of three parts. In Part 1, you'll introduce yourself and speak about familiar topics like home, family, work, and interests. Part 2 involves speaking on a given topic for 1-2 minutes, followed by a discussion in Part 3, where you'll be asked more in-depth questions related to the topic from Part 2.
Scoring and Results (9-band scale)
Your performance is evaluated on a scale of 0-9, with half points also considered (e.g., 7.5). Each section of the test is scored separately, and the average score determines your overall band score. Most universities require at least a 7.0 score to consider an applicant.
How is the IELTS Test Graded?
The IELTS scores are graded on a 9-band scale where each band corresponds to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) levels:
- Band 1: Non-user of English, able to understand only a limited range of familiar situations.
- Band 2: Basic user of English, able to cope with very simple communication in very familiar situations.
- Band 3:Social user of English, able to cope with a range of everyday practical needs.
- Band 4:Frequent user of English, able to do work-related tasks and manage most social situations.
- Band 5: Independent user of English, able to perform a range of tasks in familiar contexts.
- Band 6:Competent user of English, able to sustain conversation or complete routine operations.
- Band 7:Proficient user of English, able to use complex structures with some error in less familiar situations.
- Band 8:Highly competent user of English, making occasional errors in complex situations.
